“Look at this!”
Xander Young Zaber slammed down his phone on the counter as Izabella Lawrence looked up from her morning coffee.
“Can this wait…? I had a very long night…”
"You need to fix this!”
Izabella sighed as Xander went over to the fridge and opened it, grabbing himself some juice.
“What exactly am I…?”
Izabella scrolled through the various messages as Xander nervously drank from his cup.
“Oh… oh no… this is bad.”
“You think!?”
Izabella read the social media feds, most of which seemed to paint Xander a villain due to his recent actions at “Glory”.
“They’re saying that I ‘cost Sora the match’.”
“I mean… you sort of did?”
“That’s beside the point; I wasn’t there for him… I was there for her!”
“She isn’t one of those… I mean… she’s not one of your…”
“What!? No! This is nothing like that!”
“I mean it’s sort of my job to know…”
“It’s… nothing… like… that…!”
“Okay, okay; good, I’m glad to hear that. Because she looks like she’s twelve…”
“Focus!”
Izabella got up from her seat and stood beside Xander, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
“Xander, what is your obsession with this… Sierra Silver?”
“I wouldn’t say it’s an obsession…”
At that moment, Clayton Bryne walked in, carrying a heavy box.
“Dude, your ‘Sierra Heckin’ Silver’ shirts just came in, where do you want ‘em?”
Izabella looked at Xander as he contemplated how to answer.
“You were saying…?”
“Those are for… homeless kids…?”
“You hate kids, especially ones that are homeless.”
“Look, I don’t see what the big deal is…”
“The big deal is that we’ve been down this road before Xander. You’re constantly living in this digital world of social media that you become so disconnected from everything else…”
“This box is kind of heavy, guys…”
“… and you latch onto people that you feel are this ‘genuine article’.”
“Look Izzie, I promise you, I’ve got this under control. It’s nothing romantic, this isn’t like…”
“Are we talking about Amaya?”
The room grew quiet as Xander drank the rest of his juice and then tossed his glass into the sink with such force that it shattered upon impact.
“I’m just going to go put these in your bedroom…”
Clayton walked off with the box of Sierra Silver shirts as Xander began to carefully pick up the shards of glass.
“If it’s not romantic…”
“I’m just… I don’t know… trying to make an impact Izzie. I’ve been in Revolution1 for what… two months now? And I’ve had one match? I’ve been training my ass off to get in the best physical shape of my life. I’m working out day and night, five days a week, in the gym, with a trainer, in the ring… I’m doing all of the things that YOU told me to do. And for what!?”
“You just need to be patient Xander, these things take time…”
“Time we don’t have. The network is demanding results, you know how it is. All they care is about the publicity, the viewership, the money. This place is a gold mine, I know it is. I mean, look at the roster… you got one of the World Champions claiming to be from ‘the Underworld’!? Or some Harley Quinn chick thinking she’s from another dimension!? We have a cult running around trying to cut people’s heads off!? There are all kinds of stories here for me to tell, all kinds of truths to be exposed. I just need…”
“Jessie-Roo!”
Xander felt like his head was about to explode as he turned to face the arrival of the other Bryne brother, annoyed at yet another interruption.
“Check it out Xander, your Jessie-Roo is here…”
Edwin pretended to have the stuffed kangaroo hop around as Izabella shook her head, trying to silently warn him that Xander wasn’t “in the mood”.
“Come on Xander, you silly drongo, let’s see what you…”
Edwin finally clued in on the situation and immediately tucked the animal behind his back.
“What’s that, Clayton!? You need my help…?”
“What!? No! I never said…”
“I’ll be right there!”
Edwin excused himself as the sound of Xander’s phone buzzing to life was heard. Izabella grabbed it, looking down at the message before smiling over at her star. She handed it to him as his eyes scanned the screen.
“Sometimes patience pays off…”
“What are you talking about; I didn’t even get scheduled… again. And I can’t keep doing the ‘X-Factor’ show when these people don’t even know who I am. Amelia Hearts was supposed to be my meal ticket and she fucking dropped the brand new Horrorcore title within a week of me ‘gifting’ it to her. Spoiler alert, she was supposed to pay me back for that one.”
Izabella furrowed her brow as Xander shook his head.
“No, not like that. However, I wouldn’t have minded…”
Xander quickly tried to shake the thoughts of Amelia Hearts lying in his bedroom, clad only in silk undergarments, spread across his bed as flower petals fell from the ceiling, her body rising up to meet him, her lips kissing down his chest until he… and then… they… damn it… focus!
“And then I invite Sierra Silver on the show and she’s only interested in talking about how ‘evil’ she supposedly is. I thought maybe I could latch on to her coat tails but it seems like there’s no way of that happening now, thanks to the most recent public opinions of yours truly.”
“Sometimes opportunity comes knocking Xander, other times… you just got to take it by the balls.”
“So… what… another battle royal then?”
“You want to prove to people that you’re ‘for real’? Then you need to earn your lumps and pay your dues.”
“Fine… we’ll do things your way, for now. But if this doesn’t work…”
“Don’t worry, there’s always Plan B…”
