It had been 11 years since Katarina Hamilton's mother Cassandra Starr had been brutally murdered by her Stepfather, Barry Morgan. How different life would have been for the Connecticut socialite had her mother never met the vindictive, criminal attorney, ultimately responsible for the end of her family as she knew it. She was 19 now, but still held on to so many questions from her childhood, that was taken from her much too soon.
Instead of the mansion she would have inherited from her late father, so many things had to be sold to cover Barry's many gambling debts he had hidden from her mother. After they had died, Blaine ( Katarina`s older brother) got served papers from all three local casinos, showcasing the astronomical amount of money Barry had owed in back gambling debts. Katarina will never forget, seeing her brother sitting at the family dining room table, breaking down into tears, knowing that they would lose everything, just adding insult to injury.
The home the children shared with their mother and Barry, was all they had left of their Late father Michael Diamond. Who was slaughtered during war; against the Pearl Fusion Empire, Their mother would always share stories with the children about their late father. Blaine was only 8 and Katarina was not born yet, a surprise that was not yet known at the time. Blaine remembers seeing his mother and father in a loving embrace for the last time. Only having a few days together after they had reunited, after 6 years of living in France with just his mother. He remembers how she begged him not to go, how they were finally a family. How he reassured them, he would return and they would start over. The helicopter took Blaine and Cassandra away, as he watched his father flash a reassuring smile, waving to them. His mothers hand pressed against the glass. It wasn`t until a few days later, the helicopter that should have been carrying his father, had only his bodyguards left. He recalled hearing his mother sob, staring through the small window in the Africa tent they were staying, he watched his mother fall to the ground. He had said after he was killed, that was the moment he knew something had broken inside her.
It wasn`t until Katarina was about 5, that her mother had met Barry Morgan. He was tall, handsome, rich and he seemed to love their mother. The only part that didn't turn into a lie, was his height.
There were nights that Barry would come home drunk stumbling into the house, and use Cassandra as his own personal punching bag, Blaine would hold Katarina, and talk about what he could remember of their father, any of the ¨happy¨ moments he could remember.
There was only one picture in the home of their father, Barry had made sure to get rid of any of memory of Michael. It sat on a small table by Cassandra`s side of the bed, a picture of Michael, his arm wrapped around Cassandra, as Uncle Danny (Cassandra`s only brother) had a glass raised. Anytime Katarina would ask her mother about the picture, Cassandra would smile. She loved talking about Michael, would hold Katarina`s little face in her hand, and say you only find love like that once in your life, my love, if you are lucky. The conversations were always short lived, as Barry would appear.
In the beginning Barry appeared to be the picture perfect stepfather. Showing up to all the kids events, being loving to their mother it was the perfect ruse. Once they were married, it all ended.
Katarina distinctly remembers a moment at the wedding. She was only 6, and was twirling in a gown that matched her mothers white satin dress. Not paying attention, as most children are good at, she accidentally stepped on Barry`s newly polished black shoes. He roughly grabbed her by the arm, and began to lay into her about her carelessness, thinking no one was around.
Voice:¨ I know you are not touching or talking to my niece like that
The voice said abruptly
Both Barry and Katarina turned around to see her Uncle Danny standing there, grinding his teeth
Barry blatantly ignoring Danny, turned around and continued to scold Katarina
Danny walked right up behind him, and abruptly removed his hand from her arm picking her up, and wrapping her around him. Danny smiled at his niece and wiped her tears. He placed her down gently, kissing her on the forehead.
Danny:¨ Kat, why don`t you go check on your mom, and let me know how shes doing
Katarina did as she was told, scurrying down the hall, never knowing what was said to her future stepfather, but if it was coming from her Uncle, one could assume it wasn`t good.
Immediately, following the double murder of both her mother and stepfather, Blaine and Katarina were split up. Danny took in Blaine, but a little girl was too much for him to handle handing her over to Cassandra`s best friend Laura Hamilton. Laura was a lot like her mother, warm, compassionate, but not equipped to deal with the trauma left in Katarina`s heart, or the genetics left behind by her father.
Laura Hamilton`s Home
Present Day
The Forsaken
“You`re going to be late” a woman's voice bellowed up the stairs. Katarina appeared, rushing down the stairs, her brunette curls tied up into a high ponytail. Knee high leather boots, a black skirt and a fitted button down top. She was met at the bottom of the stairs by Laura, holding a brown bag. Katarina took the bag from Laura and laughed.
Katarina: You know, im 19 now auntie, you don't have to keep making me lunches for work
Laura shrugged
Laura: Look kid, we have been learning this thing together for the last 11 years. You will just have to deal with me.
Katarina smiled, shaking her head. She adored her aunt, someone who through everything she could trust.
Laura raised an eyebrow as she looked Katarina up and down.
Laura:¨So am i ever going to find out where you work? She hesitated… Dressed like that?
Katarina laughed, kissed her aunt on the forehead and walked out the door.
