And It Begins...
The sun breaks through the window as morning begins. Cerise blinks open her eyes and looks over to her left, seeing the man from last night still asleep, his suit crumpled up next to her sequin dress by the bed. She slowly slides out from under the covers, keeping the white bed sheet close to her naked form as she reaches for her dress, trying not to arouse the newest notch on her belt. She quickly slips her dress over her head as she heads to the nearby nightstand to grab her phone. Not before sliding a few hundred bills out of the wallet that lay beneath it. She hastily grabbed her black satin heels and headed for the hotel door; shoving the money in her purse as she swung it over her shoulder and headed down the hall. She heard the hotel door click shut behind her as she shook her head and muttered…
Cerise: ”Sucker” as she laughed to herself.
Cerise had turned her extraordinary telepathic ability into a lucrative business. Where does one go when they have the ability to read minds; well the casino…. of course. Cerise knew from an early age that she was able to predict the future, or even what someone was thinking. As she got older, her life was met with many traumatic events, but she didn't just learn to survive, she thrived.
Every night she played the tables, inconspicuous to those around her about the fact that she would win every time. She traveled to different cities, collecting from vulnerable casinos, and sleeping with unsuspecting men. Usually rich business men, she knew she could bed and rip off. Cerise was never in any one place too long, never wanting people to suspect her abilities. She had few relationships, never trusting men as she saw where that led, with her mother. Her mother, who had been killed in cold blood by her “loving” Step-Father. Men, in her mind, were evil creatures who deserved what they had coming to them. Cerise was a perfect trap, beautiful, well-spoken and smart. She knew who would fall for her easily, and could manipulate them into giving her what she wanted.
She took the elevator to the garage, finding her pink Tesla waiting for her. The valet pulled up, handing Cerise the keys, as she tipped and got in; winking at the valet attendant. The garage was practically empty as it was still quite early in the day. Cerise lowered the visor as a picture fell on her lap, revealing a tall brunette woman standing next to a teenage boy and a young female child. She placed her hand on the picture as flashes of memories instantly began to wash over her. It was like she was living in the moment of the picture.
Everything around her got dark and all you could see was the Woman and two children from the photograph. Standing together as the timer went off on the phone. A flash, lighting up the room as the picture was taken. The woman looked at the picture of her and her two children, scrunched her nose and put the phone back on the stand.
Woman: "Come on kids, let's try to get one more nice picture before the movers get here.”
The little girl, only about 4 or 5, continues playing with her dolls, ignoring her mother`s request. The woman raises her voice a little louder.
Woman: "Katarina, we need to take this picture now; please put down the dolls!”
The girl continues to ignore her mother, when a tall muscular built man comes up from behind Katarina, forcefully grabbing her by the arm, dragging her to her feet.
Man: “Cass, you need to really get control of your children. It's not that hard” he muttered, frustrated.
Cass: “I told you not to grab her like that.” Protectively swiping his arm away from her daughter.
The man sighed and poured another glass of whisky from the table.
Man: “I wouldn't have to if you had any control over these brats” he responded snidely.
Katarina began crying as the teenage boy, presumably her brother, came to comfort her.
Man: “Stop your whining, I don't want to hear it!” he shouted.
Teenage Boy: “Well, maybe don’t be such a prick next time Barry” staring at the man, with pure disdain in his eyes.
This clearly wasn't the first time an interaction like this had taken place, with this family.
Barry, obviously irritated at the teenager's comment, slammed his glass on the table and headed towards the boy.
Barry: “Excuse me!? You need to respect your father, Blaine!” he shouted.
Blaine guffawed at the comment, while putting his sister behind himself in an act of protection.
Blaine: “YOU are not MY father… you`re just the asshole my mother married in an act of desperation” he scoffed.
Cass attempted to jump in between the two men, trying to de-escalate the situation while Katarina continued crying in the back, scared of what was destined to happen next.
Suddenly, a loud bang startles Cerise, as the blackness disappears and she is brought back to reality. She looks out her window as the valet driver is motioning for her to leave the parking garage. She rolls her eyes, as she puts the picture back on the visor and speeds off out of the garage. The sun is still rising as she passes down the narrow streets of this Forsaken world, a world where survival is key… by any means necessary.
