A Few Days Ago
‘This is bull.’
‘No, it’s not.’
‘Um…yeah it is.’
‘No. It’s really not. She was right.’
‘What’chu talkin’ ‘bout, Way?’
‘Cartier. She was right. About me. About my career.’
‘Are you messing with me right now?’
‘Nope.’
‘...so you really gonna tell yourself that?’
‘Yeah. I am. Because it’s true.’
‘It’s really not, though…’
‘Yes. It. Is. You know it is. We need to stop kidding ourselves about this, guys.’
‘Kidding ourselves?! Dang, Iz, your man’s going cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs over here!’
‘Stop it, Teagan. You know what I mean.’
‘Do I?’
‘You should…’
‘Well, I don’t. Mind explaining?’
‘You don’t need me to explain it to you. You totally know what I’m talking about! What Cartier said last week about me only winning when the stakes are low, or I get lucky, or I can take advantage! It’s totally true!’
‘Um…Miles? Aren’t you kind'a forgetting something? You know, like how you’re the World Cham---’
‘—don’t even say it, Izzy!’
‘But—’
‘Don’t. Say it.’
‘Why not?’
‘Because, I shouldn’t be the World Champion anymore! You know who should? The girl who exposed me in her video, and then exposed me in the middle of the ring!’
‘Exposed you?’
‘Yeah. Exposed me. And she didn’t even need to cheat. She just got me, in the middle of the ring, one-two-three, good night, little Miles!’
‘Miles---’
‘That’s who should be the World Champion! And if that match the other night had been for the title…like it should have been…that belt right there would not be living in this house anymore. That’s the long and the short of it. No use trying to pretend otherwise.’
‘But Miles! That was just one match! You can bounce back! Easy-peasy! All you gotta do is beat this next chick coming up, and you’re gonna be right back on top again!’
‘Well, not exactly on top. He’s still not Main Eve---’
‘---shut up, Teagan.’
‘That’s another thing, though. You see what they’re doing?’
‘What do you mean?’
‘Well…look at who I’m booked against. Look at what the match is. You see any stakes? See anything major about it?’
‘Um…no, but—’
‘Exactly. There aren’t any stakes. There isn't anything major about it. It’s just a random match, against a newcomer, where I can look good without any pressure. Don’t you guys see it? They’re protecting me. They’re protecting their Champion.’
‘Miles—’
‘Which means, Cartier was right about that, too. The only reason I keep winning is because they keep softballing me. Giving me easy lay-ups.’
‘Wait, what sport are you talking about right now? Are we still talking about wrestling?’
‘Yeah, Miles. I think you’re a little confused if you say they’re giving you a cushy booking here. Either that, or you’re not paying attention. In which case, you deserve to punk out.’
‘Gee. Thanks.’
‘No, but seriously…you seen what this girl has done? Olympic Champion, Miles! How the heck is that a softball or whatever?’
‘Wait, what?!’
‘Yup. I knew you weren’t paying attention. You probably didn’t even look at the card. You just saw a name you didn’t know, and assumed you were having it easy, and started whining about it. ‘
‘Yeah. I hate to say it, but she’s right this time, dude. That was really out of character for you.’
‘Yeeeeeaaahhhh… My bad, I guess.’
‘At least you admit it. Better than most people…’
‘Well, he is better than most people. Just Saiyan.’
'D'awww! You guys are precious!'
'D'awww! You guys are precious!'
‘Thanks, Iz. I don’t feel so hot right now, though. Especially because you guys are right.’
‘No duh. We’re always right.’
‘Shut up, Teagan.’
‘Shut up, Teagan.’
‘Geez. You guys got no chill. None.’
‘Anyway, I better go do my homework on this girl, so I know what I'm talking about on my video later. What was her name again?’
‘Dude! How do you not even know her name?! It’s Katt A. Pult---HEY! WAIT A MINUTE! What the heck?! This is gimmick infringement!’
‘Say what?!’
‘Yeah! What’s Miss Olympia playing at? Didn’t anybody tell her there’s already one guy in this company with a joke name? And he’s the World Champion?’
‘I guess her parents had a sense of humor, too. It’s no big deal.’
‘No big deal?! Miles, she’s stealing your game!’
‘Teagan, it’s really no---’
‘---and whoa, wait a second! Check out what her moveset is on Wikipedia! It’s all suplexes and stuff! It’s made for throwing people around!’
‘Yeah. That’s kind of what you do in Olympic wrestling, Teags…’
‘No, but, I mean…Miles does air stuff. This girl does ground stuff. Turtleneck Boy here jumps off the corner once, she catches him, and that’s all she wrote! That’s not fair! What, they letting Diamond Girl book the shows now, or something?’
‘Teagan---it’s fine. Really. All that means is, I’ve got to prepare. Which I was going to do anyway. It’s part of training for a match. Just saying.’
‘Yeah, well…it still smells like sushi to me.’
‘Guys…seriously….I’ll be fine. I just have to go brush up on this girl, so I don’t embarrass myself on camera. So if you guys excuse me, I think I’m going to go do that. I’ll see you guys in a while, OK?’
‘Sure thing. Holla if you need any help.’
‘Will do. Catch you guys later. Right now, I’ve got a date with a throwing machine.’

A Few Hours Later
‘Hey, Kat.’
Yup. That seems like as good of a start as any.
‘How you doing? I’m Miles. Miles A. Way. The Revo1 World Champion. And your first opponent. Which makes me just about the best person to say…welcome to the company.’
There. Just because I need to beat her, doesn’t mean I can’t be polite.
‘Or maybe I ought to say welcome back to the company. Hall of Famer, huh? I’m impressed. And an Olympic champion, too… I guess my friends are right. I guess I am in trouble next Tuesday!’
Right. Time for some real talk.
‘I mean that, Kat. I’m not trying to stroke your ego or anything. I’m a lightweight flyer, and you’re a buff throwing expert. That story kind of writes itself. It’s like my friend Teagan said…I jump off the ropes, you catch me, and that’s the end of my offence. And you being an Olympic champion, I’m not going to sit here and pretend that won’t ever happen. It probably will. And it’ll probably be really early on, too.’
OK. Now for the ‘but…’ part.
‘But…’
Yup. Nailed it.
‘…but, with that said, there’s some things you’ve got to know about me, too. And I don’t mean this belt. You can see this belt. I don’t need to tell you I have it. What you need to know is…no matter what some people in the roster might tell you…I rep this belt. Even when I lose. Even when there aren’t any stakes. Every time I go out there, I do my best to rep this belt, and show whoever’s in the ring with me, or backstage, or at home watching, exactly why I won it, and exactly what it means to me to have it. And with you, Kat…It’s not going to be any different.’
...and here comes the 'Because…' part....
‘Because the truth is, Kat…no matter where I am on the card…no matter who I’m fighting or what I’m fighting for…no matter what happened in my previous match…every time I step out there in front of those fans…I am a World Champion. Their World Champion. And I’ve got to act like it.’
Right. That was pretty good, too. Now let's wrap this one up.
‘So Kat…don’t get ready to throw…get ready to run. Because on Tuesday…it’s not your arms that will be getting a workout…it’s your legs. See, to throw me around, you have to catch me first. And I’m pretty freaking squirrelly.’
Right. Now I’m wrapping it up.
‘Kat…when you come into Revo1 on Tuesday…know who you are and what you’ve done…but make sure you also know who I am and what I’ve done. Do that, and we can have a fight to steal the show. If you take that little guy across the ring from you for granted, though…you just might find out what everyone else who made that mistake did. That it’s not about how big you are...it’s about how big the other guy wants to be.
And me? I want to be pretty freaking big.’
There. That sounds like a good place to end it. If Run was here, he’d probably tell me to stop there, too.
Besides, I don’t have a lot more time to spend on this. I have to start practising.
I’m facing a fellow Champion in less than a week. And I have to show her why I deserve that title, too.
As my Dad would put it…Champion is as Champion does.
