Thomas Snow sat in the airport, staring at his phone
Thomas just shrugged and put his phone away as people began flowing out of the flight he was waiting for. One by one passengers began pairing up with the people waiting for them. Finally, once everyone had cleared out, his friend Sierra stepped out of the tunnel. Thomas got up and rushed to hug his friend.
"Hey, Si!"
"Hey, Tommy..."
"How was your flight?"
"Five hours with at least three babies taking turns screaming. So it was just peachy."
"Well, you're here now."
Thomas and Sierra continued chatting as they got into an Uber and began the trip to Cooper's house. As they drove, Thomas continued to glance at his phone every once in a while. He was just waiting for any positive sign from his father.
After a short drive, the two stepped out of the Uber and walked up to the front door. They walked in and made their way to the living room where Cooper was found on the couch, playing a video game on the TV.
"Hey, Coop."
"Yo!"
Cooper paused the game and jumped over the back of the couch to greet Thomas and Sierra.
"Si, this is Cooper. Coop, this is Sierra."
Sierra and Cooper both extended their hands for each other to shake. Afterward, Cooper made a courteous bow to her.
"Nice to meet you, Ms. Sierra."
"You too. Any friend of Thomas is a friend of mine."
"Good, good. So what brings you all the way out here to the Golden State?"
"I got booked for a short run in a little promotion here. So I figured I'd visit Tommy here."
"Oh, so you're a wrestler too?"
"Yep."
"We used to team together. Former DMCW tag team champions, The Deadly Sins."
Cooper chuckled a little bit.
"Deadly Sins? Not exactly how I would describe Thomas."
"It's based on an anime we like. Seven Deadly Sins."
"Ah."
"Hey, is that Mortal Kombat?"
"MK2, you play?"
"Hell yeah, Tom and I used to play every day."
"Really? No wonder he kicks my ass every time."
"Subzero?"
Cooper nodded.
"Figures."
"Care for a game?"
Sierra nodded. Cooper jumped back over the couch and grabbed a controller for Sierra to use. The three sat down on the couch as they began to play. As they did so, they began discussing Thomas' upcoming match on Sin.
"Oh, you're finally teaming with Pasha?"
"Yeah, but I'm kinda nervous about it."
"Tom, come on. It was a wrestling match. I'm sure he ain't upset no more."
Thomas nodded.
"Doesn't Pasha think you're like, his best friend?"
"He uh... says he'll be my new dad."
Cooper and Sierra both laughed.
"Good, cause you could use one."
"How's that going with him, by the way?"
Thomas shrugged and shook his head.
"Got it. I'll drop it."
"Thanks, man."
"Anyway, your opponents. What're they like?"
"Graham Clauson and Madwoman Szalinski. He used to team with one of the Szalinski's. Won a set of titles once but fizzled out soon after. She claims to be a part of this so-called famous wrestling family that only a few have actually heard of. She's also the current TV champ."
"Damn. How did you know that?"
"She likes to study the wrestlers of all the shows she watches."
"Helps me figure out what works and what doesn't so I can improve my game."
"And do these two work?"
"Well, the chick must be doing something right since she's champ. But for the most part, no. Especially not together."
"Maybe, but I'm still not taking them-"
Thomas was cut off by the sound of his phone ringing in his pocket. He pulled the phone out of his pocket and glanced at the caller ID which read "Dad".
As Cooper and Sierra focused on their game, Thomas excused himself to the guest bedroom where he had been staying and answered the call without a greeting.
"Tom."
"What?"
"Where are you? We need to do this promo. You need all the help you can get after failing miserably. Being teamed up with that giant waste of space isn't helping."
"...Are you serious?"
"Of course I am."
"Do you seriously think I'm going to just come back to you? I'm just supposed to forget that you shunned me for weeks simply because I lost my title?"
"Oh come on, Tom. You can't be so sensitive about this stuff. That's what happens when you lose."
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize parents abandon their teenage kids when they don't meet their expectations."
"You're a grown man who makes more money a week than most do in a month. Don't act like a lost, helpless puppy."
"That's not the point! Good god, you honestly call yourself a father? You've been such a sorry excuse for one ever since mom-"
"Don't you DARE bring her into this. I have done nothing but support you. I supported your stupid wrestling dream. I drove you to all of those pointless matches. Oh, and let me remind you I pretty much handed you that world title."
"I paid for all of my training on my own. I had to find transportation to any venue more than ten miles away. And, let me remind you, you didn't help me train at all for that match, didn't eliminate anyone, you didn't step in the ring. You have done very little for me, which is more than I want you to."
"So are you saying you want to fire me again?"
"Yes."
"Heh... all right, your funeral. See you at Bad Moon Rising, kid."
*boop boop boop*
Thomas silently put his phone away and walked out of the room to rejoin his friends. Sierra was busy cheering her victory in their game.
"Check it, Tommy! I actually won one!"
"She got lucky."
"Yeah, that's great, Si..."
"You good dude?"
Thomas shook his head.
"What's up?"
"Well, I fired my dad."
"Awesome! About time!"
"But now I think he's going to try and ruin my career..."
"Oh well, man. Fuck him. People fucking love you, dude. Nothing he can say will change that."
"You don't know that."
"Whatever, man. We'll all deal with that when we get to it. Let's focus on the match this week."
Thomas nodded.
"Hey, If you beat this mad chick, you think you'll get a shot at her belt?"
"If we win the match, I think Pasha should get that shot. He deserves it more."
"Who cares about who deserves it more? You're gonna win this thing easy. I heard those two can't get along to save their lives. Some kind of rivalry with him and that family of hers. And whoever does end up getting it will beat her easily. Even Thomas outsizes her!"
"Hey, I'm right here."
"It's a compliment, Tommy. You're bigger than her and Pasha is like, twice her size. Either of you can take her out with ease. And Clauson? He's pretty rusty. A match here or there but he's been ultimately silent before coming to Trinity. Don't take him lightly and you'll be good."
"All you really need to do is have Pasha sit on them and you'll win."
Thomas chuckled a little bit.
"Or hug them into submission."
All three of them began to laugh with each other. With all of them having a good time again, the worries that had been plaguing Thomas began to slowly fade away, for the time being, allowing him to focus on the task at hand... beating Clauson and Szalinski.
"So, Tommy, you wanna go?"
"Sure."
Thomas and Sierra picked up their controllers and began to select their characters.
"So, you and Pasha. You got a name in mind?"
"Yeah... I've got an idea for a name..."
Thomas selected his character, Subzero.

9/11 - 12:04AM
Dad: That's exactly what I thought was going to happen. Don't bother coming to the hotel tonight.
Me: What? Where am I supposed to go??
Dad: Not my problem.
Me: Dad, come on. You can't be serious.
12:20 AM
Me: Okay, fine. I'm staying with Cooper tonight. Call me in the morning.
9:00 AM
Me: It was one loss, are you really going hold it over my head?
9/18 - 12:00PM
Me: I don't know what to tell you. Everybody wins some and loses some. If you're going to shun me for that, then I just don't know what to say.
9/23 - 6:00PM
Me: I'm going to be meeting Sierra at the airport on Sunday. I'm giving you until then to get back to me then I'm going to stop trying.
