Masahiro Nagata is the youngest of three sons of Japanese wrestling legend Juro Nagata. The Nagata family gained worldwide fame in 1987 when then 44 year old Juro left the largest promotion in North America while their World Champion to return to Japan to found ONE Japan Pro Wrestling. Upon founding ONE, Juro promptly retired from in ring competition and proclaimed his oldest son Kazuki as the future of wrestling in Japan.
In less than a year ONE had established itself as the premier wrestling organization in Japan with 22 year old Kazuki reaching near celebrity status in the country as reigning ONE Heavyweight Champion. Tragedy struck the Nagata’s in 1988 as family matriarch Yumi passed away. The mourning process for Juro didn't last long however as 3 months after the passing of his first wife he married top Japanese female wrestler Mizuki Hoku who was 20 years younger. In late 1989 they would welcome their son Masahiro.
By 1999 ONE had not only put many of the smaller Japanese promotions out of business by stealing their talent but it had also begun signing some of the biggest names from all over the world. Just as middle son, 25 year old Hatsuo Nagata was about to reach the pinnacle of his career and become ONE Heavyweight Champion tragedy struck again as a 7 foot American botched a Power Bomb, breaking Hatsuo’s neck and ending his life inside the ring. A grief stricken Juro Nagata vowed that no other “sloppy Americans” would be allowed to compete in ONE and he released all the American talent under contract at the time.
After his 9th reign as ONE Heavyweight Champion came to an end Kazuki Nagata, fearful that no new talent was coming through ONE, began negotiating deals with American talent behind his father's back. After a bitter family feud Juro began allowing Americans to wrestle for ONE again. It was also at this time that the last of the Nagata sons, 15 year old Masahiro began expressing interest in following in the footsteps of his father, mother, and both brothers by stepping into the ring. Due to the death of Hatsuo, Juro was adamant that Masahiro would never step foot in the ring and they went back and forth for three years on the subject.
A determined Masahiro set out on his 18th birthday to find training elsewhere and, once again behind the back of their father, Kazuki helped Masahiro get in touch with one of the most prestigious training programs in the US, West Coast Wrestling University known simply as Wrestle U. Kazuki funded his younger brothers travel, room and board, and training expenses all to spite Juro. Once the elder Nagata became aware of the betrayal he exiled Kazuki from the promotion and the family. His whereabouts are still unknown. Rumors within the wrestling community suggest Juro had his son murdered.
Masahiro, taking the ring name Kuroi Hitsuji which means Black Sheep in Japanese, impressed his trainers right away and advanced through training far faster than most. When Pacific Pride Puroresu formed in 2010 Kuroi Hitsuji was one of the few students Wrestle U sent to be part of the new Japanese influenced company. Kuroi Hitsuji quickly became one of the top stars of P3. He would become the second ever P3 Heavyweight Champion and held it six more times.
After losing the title for the final time in 2015 Masahiro returned to Japan using his Kuroi Hitsuji gimmick and wrestled for smaller promotions before his father could no longer deny the star he had become. He would go on to win the ONE Heavyweight Championship on three occasions under his real name before his father soured on a style he called “too American” even though he wrestled in a heavily Japanese influenced promotion while in the US. After a final falling out in May of 2020 that included Juro putting a hit out on his own son and offering up a large sum of money to the first person on the ONE roster who could end Masahiro’s career, Masahiro has decided to return to America.
